It only feels like yesterday since we were previewing Alan Wake first time around, then with a release date of TBC 2009... But it finally looks like we’re actually going to see it this year! Of course we know we’re only setting ourselves up for another massive disappointment, but what the hell.
Pitched as a psychological action thriller, players assume the role of Alan Wake, a best-selling suspense author suffering from writer's block, who escapes to a small town only to experience the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée. Wearing its Twin Peaks influences proudly, Alan Wake is to be mission-based with a deeply engaging and suspenseful storyline unveiling new twists and profound character revelations at every turn.
Players will unravel the plot through multilayered character interactions, unique problem-solving and intense combat against terrifying enemies. In this nightmarish world, where fantasy and reality collide, Alan Wake must use a variety of weapons to survive, including his most powerful ally against the darkness — light itself.
It all sounds fantastic, and the new screens we saw from E3 were encouraging, but despite having high hopes, we can’t but feel a little concerned that Heavy Rain (which we featured heavily in issue 5) might just steal Alan Wake’s long anticipated thunder.
